Faith and Fear (In Five Short Comic Strips)

One of the challenges I’ve found has been trying to present comic strips in sequential order. They naturally post with most recent first at the top, and that works great for single topic posts. It just gets tough when there is a sequence. If you are a new or first-time reader, you won’t easily know what has led up the present comic strip. It’s not always easy to find the first in the series. This is an attempt to make that easier.

Select the thumbnail image or link to go to the comic strip where you’d like to start reading, then you can advance through the series.

The Volcano-Stomping Robot vs. The Robot-Melting Volcano!

Laser Eyes Jesus #044 “The Volcano-Stomping Robot vs. The Robot-Melting Volcano!” The main point of this comic strip is we are all naturally most concerned with ourselves and getting things that will ensure our happiness and pleasure. It’s all about survival, even if our own getting blocks our neighbor’s getting.

Are We All More Alike Than We Realize?

Laser Eyes Jesus #045 “Are Things More Alike Than We Realize?” The main point here is we create justifications for our actions to get what we want. We can sometimes treat God as if He doesn’t exist (killing God) because we want Him to do something that He isn’t doing. We can sometimes treat God as if He is what He is not (warping God’s image) because we can threaten others with what He might do.

Two More For The Museum Of Abandoned Science Fair Projects!

Laser Eyes Jesus #046 “Two More For The Museum Of Abandoned Science Fair Projects!” This comic strip points out that we are going to run into dead ends, particularly when we aren’t waiting on God in faith and trust. When we hit a dead end, our natural inclination is to try to take over and exert our own power in a situation to manipulate the outcome any way that we can. Instead we need to humble ourselves and hold fast to Jesus.

First Epilogue: Whatever Happened To Larry And Brenda?

Laser Eyes Jesus #047 “First Epilogue: Whatever Happened To Larry And Brenda?” Here is a happy ending comic strip, just because one seemed to be needed. It also points out that sometimes opposite positions can sometimes produce pleasant compromises, even in the form of baby multi-purpose appliances!

Second Epilogue: A Night Of Wrestling With Fear

Laser Eyes Jesus #048 “Second Epilogue: A Night Of Wrestling With Fear” This final comic strip in the series shows a different side to the character Laser Eyes Jesus, and for regular readers, you know this happens mostly at night when the only two children left. This comic strip series has been about overcoming fear and dead ends by following the example of Jesus. It is not a step-by-step process. There really is only one step: know Real Life Jesus.

Second Epilogue: A Night Of Wrestling With Fear

Second Epilogue: A Night Of Wrestling With Fear

This is the second epilogue and the fifth and final comic strip in this series. Because it has explored how fear can lead us to abandoning God or warping God’s image into what He is not, it seemed right to explore that one last time.

In “Are Things More Alike Than We Realize?” Nate says he is tired of being afraid of Roman soldiers and what they do to people. That’s why he just wants God to DO something. There were a lot of people who wanted Jesus to DO something about the Roman occupation of Israel. They wanted Him to be King of Israel, drive out the Romans, and restore peace and prosperity.

Have you ever been in a place where you just wanted God to DO something? Anything? Just as long as it changed the situation in some way? (Hopefully for the better since after all He is God and God is good and all of that?)

I can’t imagine what it would have been like growing up during that time period and seeing people so often beaten and tortured, hanging on crosses…alway wondering “Could that happen to me? Could I be next?”

And yet, those fearful questions have now become an American fear as our children are growing up with school mass shootings and wondering “Could that happen to me? Could I be next?” How are we dealing with that fear?

Maybe some of us are turning our backs on God and saying, “How can a loving God allow this to keep happening? I can’t believe in this God.”

Maybe some of us are warping God’s image by saying, “How can God NOT allow more school massacres? This is all because of how sinful the American society has become and if He does stop the shootings, then that would mean He approved of our sinful society.”

Neither is correct. I don’t have a way out though. Another DEAD END on the journey. But I don’t want to make this all about gun violence in schools because it’s just one example of many fears.

In all things pertaining to life, I believe, Real Life Jesus is our one true example, model, and guide. He faced fear one night in a garden called Gethsemane.

…and He knelt down and began to pray, saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. (Luke 22:42-44 NASB)

We don’t have a complete record of what Jesus was thinking and feeling, but I’m fine with that. In this comic strip, Laser Eyes Jesus does present one possibility, but that was simply what came to my mind as I was putting it together visually. “What would saving the whole world look like?” The Cross of Jesus definitely looked like a DEAD END to at the time, didn’t it?

Actually I think it’s a good thing we don’t have that complete record of what Jesus was thinking and feeling in the Garden of Gethsemane since agony and fear and anguish are all deeply personal and individual. Not knowing completely prevents me or anyone else from turning this into “How To Conquer Fear In Three Easy Steps Just Like Jesus!” It encourages us to look to Jesus and hold fast to Jesus Himself, not what someone else has said about Jesus.

But I can say without a doubt Jesus is with you in your anxiety and fear. He will not leave you or forsake you. He will be there through it all with you. He may not DO anything like what you want Him to do. But He is not going to abandon you. He is not going to change His love for you.

For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. (Hebrews 4:15 NASB)

He has been there. He has faced the things that make us feel weak and helpless. He did not fail. He can help us do the same. This, I believe, is Real Life Jesus. Hold fast to Him.

First Epilogue: Whatever Happened To Larry And Brenda?

First Epilogue: Whatever Happened To Larry And Brenda?

Just one more epilogue left, and then this will all be wrapped up, hopefully, with one last look at the “We Have Finally Killed God!” Guy from the beginning of this series…way back before we took a detour with “Laser Eyes Jesus.”

Sometimes there really are happy endings after all…even if nobody wins a Science Fair ribbon! It just didn’t seem right to send Larry and Brenda off to The Museum Of Abandoned Science Fair Projects without saying a little more about them.

Since these two have been presented as “opposites,” it seemed like there would ultimately be an attraction like magnets. Sort of scientific, right? After all, you might imagine Brenda the Volcano would be somewhat of a “hothead” while Larry the Robot would be “as cold as ice.” It turns out, Brenda is the logical and practical one while Larry is the wildly emotional one! Maybe opposites really do attract?!?

Is there a lesson here? Maybe. Maybe not.

Could it be that we often can not anticipate how God will work things out? And that when we try to force God work things out (preferably our way), we are only going to end up frustrating ourselves?

Could God be working towards something bigger than what any of us can possibly imagine? Hmm… Maybe so!

And yet even in our fears and anxieties, something good can come out of it, right? Like those cute little multi-purpose appliances!

Bedtime story is over. Next Up…Laser Eyes Jesus #048 “Second Epilogue: A Night Of Wrestling With Fear”

Two More For The Museum Of Abandoned Science Fair Projects!

Two More For The Museum Of Abandoned Science Fair Projects!

This is the third of three Laser Eyes Jesus comic strips in a series, and they are mostly about moving from having a religious knowing of Jesus towards having a relationship knowing of Jesus. (There are also two epilogue to the series that are on the digital drawing board!)

Sometimes it feels as if I’ve drawn and written myself into a corner. Like now. Seriously. I start with a graphic, then I start thinking about the words that should go with them. Then I have a question and a general idea to go with that question, and from there I’m just sort of stumbling blindly to find an answer.

Like with the Science Fair in this series. I started with sort of a “theist vs. atheist” direction which developed into a “kill God vs. warp God’s image” direction which developed into a “God-made vs. man-made” direction which has led me to where I am now…at a “Volcano-Stomping Robot vs. Robot-Melting Volcano” DEAD END!

It’s a dead end because everyone gets blasted by Laser Eyes Jesus. Nobody wins the Science Fair Ribbon. Larry the Robot and Brenda the Volcano are banished to The Museum Of Abandoned Science Fair Projects. All seems to have come to a complete stop. Journeys sometimes feel that way.

But is this really a dead end? Do our journeys in life really even have dead ends? Could there be a door at every dead end, just below eye level?

I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. (John 10:9 KJV)

Maybe it’s a door that requires us to stoop over a little to be able to find and to pass through? Maybe to look down in humbleness. So what do you think?

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. (James 4:10 KJV)

Laser Eyes Jesus blasts both Lydia and Nate for not starting with a question, and not starting with a question about his favorite pudding cups! But he sidesteps having to choose sides. Perhaps he knows that neither of them had good motivations behind their choices? Maybe he didn’t know how to move beyond the dead end either?

If you’ve ever been involved with a real life school science fair project, you know that it’s supposed to be about a question. Everything starts with a question. Then you go from there. Oh, and the question can’t be found in a science book or encyclopedia. It’s a personal kind of question.

Real Life Jesus loves questions. He always has, and I think He probably always will. In John’s Gospel, the first thing He says is actually a question: “What are you seeking?”

And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, “What do you seek?”… (John 1:38 NASB)

I like that question because it really is so primary to everything else in life. Depending on what you are seeking, you may or may not go in a particular direction. Until you are seeking what only Jesus can give you, maybe His direction isn’t the one for you.

The answer that these followers gave has always been interesting to me. It is unexpected. They didn’t say they were seeking anything you’d expect like truth or wisdom or holiness or fame or power or financial gain.

…They said to Him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” (John 1:38 NASB)

They just wanted to know where He was staying so they could spend more time with Him. I think that is probably the most honest and open answer they could have given. Perhaps the most humble as well.

More and more I’m seeing how this question, this answer, and this humble attitude guide me as a believer and Christ-follower.

I’m seeking Real Life Jesus. To do that, I need to be with Him. I need to know that I’m staying where He is staying. He and I are both on this journey together.

For others to know what I’m seeking, they need to see that Jesus is staying and abiding with me.

No more dead ends.

When you read and consider personally the questions that Jesus asks in the Gospel records, I believe you will discover Real Life Jesus and also Real Life You.

Oops! That Page Can't Be Found

“Oops! That Page Can’t Be Found!”

Not the best thing to see on your screen, right? (Actually I added the second exclamation mark because the message just seemed to need it.)

Yesterday I reinstated a large number of previous posts that I had “hidden” to sort of give myself a fresh start with creating new material or at least a new approach. In doing this, posts were published again as if they were new content, and I think email notifications were sent out if you signed up for email notification.

I’m really sorry about that. It wasn’t my intention to overload anyone’s email box with a pile of emails! (If that is what happened?!?)

It wasn’t until I was done that I realized two of the major “Some Serious” posts were missing. They were also two of the most popular categories: “Whatever The Gospel Is…” and “Voices From The Back Pew,” and “The Gifts” Although I still have the graphics which I had backed up separately, the text was not.

Although I will probably be reposting the graphics, I really don’t have the words to put with them. It would really be difficult to recreate them because those posts in particular took a great deal of thought and prayerful listening to what God would have me write.

At first I was honestly a little grumbly about it, but then a started to see it as a new opportunity to prayerfully listen anew, and I’m looking forward to that. After all, this is a journey, right?!?

So I just want to seriously apologize to anyone and everyone who got a pile of email notifications about the posts that were put back in yesterday. It wasn’t intentional. I will work on my site management skills!

On the plus side…I have really enjoyed looking back over old posts and reviewing the feedback, suggestions, and comments. You have always given me something to think about, new questions to explore, and suggestions for other ways of looking at some really important things.

I truly feel like you are on this journey with me! Thank you so much!
