“The Pizza Topping Dilemma”

So what do you think? Is it possible to have “The Mind Of God”? (This is a continuation from yesterday’s comic strip!)

It’s really helpful to note that there are some things which are “Essentials” and some things which are “Non-Essentials” when it comes to knowing and doing.

For me, and maybe for you too, John 14:6 is an “Essential.”

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 (NRSV)

This is “Essential” because if it were not, if there were other ways of coming to the Father, then Jesus would not have had to be crucified. There would be no need for the cross.

In a way, the “Non-Essentials” are things like the food that you eat. Maybe they can also be things that you take into your mind and heart (rather than into your body), and so maybe similar principles apply?

What did Jesus say about taking things into your mind and your heart through your eyes? (Maybe ears would apply too, especially where music is concerned.)

“If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you…” Matthew 5:29 (NRSV)

But notice how He makes this on an individual basis. What enters into my mind and heart through my eyes and causes me to stumble may not have the same effect on you.

What did Paul say about clean and unclean? (This was about food into the body, but do you think it could be extended to things taken in to the mind and heart? Maybe so.)

Let us therefore no longer pass judgment on one another, but resolve instead never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of another. I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. Romans 14:13-14

For me, I think it’s really important to have a firm foundation on the “Essentials” first. This is done, I believe, by reading the Gospel of Real Life Jesus, spending time with Real Life Jesus, knowing Real Life Jesus in such a way that His promise “I am with you always” permeates your mind and heart.

(I have one more comic strip planned in this series for tomorrow. It deals with items that blur the lines by combining both “Essentials”and “Non-Essentials.” It may even feature a “special guest star appearance”!)
